Niyom Pub

This should probably go into Strobist category =) Improvised ad-hoc session while having a good time at Niyom Pub. Equipment used: Nikon D300, SB900 strobe off-camera with Styrofoam lid from ice cooler as a light modifier (masterfully hand-held by friend of mine Pawel G.). To take advantage of ambient lighting I have increased ISO, set camera and strobe to manual, and lowered strobe output to bare minimum.

As demonstrated, fortified sodas are undoubtedly catalytic in unleashing creative drive*.

* Does not apply to aspiring Strobists under legal drinking age.

Fellow photographer and a friend of mine – Marek Gołębiewski. His help and participation was instrumental in creating Insecure series (yeah, back then). This is one of my favorite portraits I ever made. Despite being technically not perfect, it actually summarizes pretty well character of the man.

Sukhumvit Valley

bw_1DSC00062-1-w

Sukhumvit road, one of the longest roads in the world (like 400 km ?). Running from the heart of Bangkok, to somewhere close to Cambodian border. This is where is starts. The grand view, against the Bangkok skyline. With all noise, crowds, and traffic jams hidden under BTS Skytrain line. Removing those tawdry colors of reality someway has distilled the true character of this place. Just like ancient Greek statues, originally painted with the vivid colors to make them look more “realistic”. Lost their colors in the course of time, and appear to us more refined than they really meant to be…

Insecure

I have recently made this series available on display in Saatchi galery (link here). You can buy signed and numbered prints of Insecure – limited edition series, right from there.

Apropos Swan

Scan-120729-0593-3w

Normally, image should stand the ground on its own, without the help of the written commentary, but here, a little perspective will probably broaden viewing experience. The stage – Poland, Łódź 1981, underpass next to Lodz-Fabryczna railway station. Cheerless ordinary winter day – cold, wet, and dark. Month or so away from the day when martial Law was imposed. A glimpse of elusive black swan (born from our oh-so-transcendent-art-flavoured endless-casual-ironic-friendly-dialog) by Ewa P.
