Scorpio (Motel continues…)

That’s the though one. What really makes this image work is the ambience of the room defined by the only available light source – TV screen. It painted everything around in an interesting, weird colors. The problem is that, since most monitors are not really calibrated – the image will mostly appear too dark, in some cases too bright, and on very few as intended. So WYSIWYG. If you want to see how it was meant to look calibrate your monitor, or order a print. Oh well…

Nostalgia

Found few 16mm reels buried in boxes with stuff that came to me from the past. Mostly devoid of any meaningful reference. Outtakes, notes, ideas, shot for the reasons now completely forgotten and irrelevant. But still, it should feel like a gift. Testimony that those few passing seconds actually happened in your life, right ? Meh…

Oddly enough Satie was one of the few that we were listening to at that time (so I was told). Along with the music of Philip Glass, Arvo Part, David Sylvian, and few important others it shaped sonic ambience of that time.

music:
Gnossienne No.1 by Erik Satie
performed by Andreas Pfaul

N.B. Jo Brunenberg did much better use of some of this material. Check it out:

It always presents a challenge. Since it is “premade” decorative element, it exerts strong visual presence within the frame. It naturally gravitates toward domination over the image, and sometime it is tempting to just let it rein free. The challenge is to tame and conform it to become a subordinate element of the composition.

Niyom Pub

This should probably go into Strobist category =) Improvised ad-hoc session while having a good time at Niyom Pub. Equipment used: Nikon D300, SB900 strobe off-camera with Styrofoam lid from ice cooler as a light modifier (masterfully hand-held by friend of mine Pawel G.). To take advantage of ambient lighting I have increased ISO, set camera and strobe to manual, and lowered strobe output to bare minimum.

As demonstrated, fortified sodas are undoubtedly catalytic in unleashing creative drive*.

* Does not apply to aspiring Strobists under legal drinking age.

Fellow photographer and a friend of mine – Marek Gołębiewski. His help and participation was instrumental in creating Insecure series (yeah, back then). This is one of my favorite portraits I ever made. Despite being technically not perfect, it actually summarizes pretty well character of the man.
